As value of the As British £ falls to $1.50 ; we can sell for less....
In a little over two years, we have brought in over a dozen furniture containers from England. Our latest container will be unloaded and ready to sell early April, 2013.
The casual antique collector might find England a little intimidating. The antique shops around famed Portobello Road boast furniture prices considerably higher than those in our shop in Lafayette. On several occasions British tourists who happened in to Rick's Antiques have commented about our low prices. As one visitor exclaimed, "How can your prices be lower than London's?"
The answer is simple. Although shipping costs are high we have several distinct advantages that allow us to price our antiques competitively. We have low overhead - owning our building, opening only three days a week. We purchase goods in quantity, often 30 or 40 pieces in a single transaction. We ship large quantities, always in 40 foot shipping containers. We do not pay a hidden Value Added Tax when we buy goods in England and we have no Sales Tax on goods we sell in Oregon.
While many of our best customers are antique dealers; our pricing does not allow margins for dealer discounts or quantity discounts. Our goal is to provide the highest quality at the lowest possible margin. Judging from our sales; I think we are succeeding.
